Replace power steering hoses

Hello guys,

Lost the power steering fluid and judging from the liquid I see it's coming from the steering hoses. Bought new, replacement appears straightforward, anything I should be aware of? also, is there a plug in the pump to completely remove the fluid and is it necessary to purge it when filling with new power steering fluid?

Thank you,

There's no plug in the reservoir. You could probably get most of it with a Mighty Vac or a turkey baster. If you really want it clean you'll have to take it off. It would probably be best to try and get some fluid into the hoses from the top before you attach them to lessen the amount of air that you'll have to purge.

After you refill you'll need to purge all the air out by turning lock to lock several times with the engine running. Make sure the fluid level doesn't go too low while you're doing it. The fluid might look cloudy from the air in it, but it will clear.

Wasn't terribly difficult, if I remember correctly there was another hose in the way that made it a bit of a pain, but otherwise shouldn't take longer than about half an hour at the most. Definitely make sure you purge all of the air out of the system, so get the front end in the air and get to turning back and forth several times.

Probably a 3/10 on the difficulty scale.

All about that unibody life.
