Replace Gas Tank Skid-Plate ????

Hi Folks,

Got a 2000 WJ with a badly rusted out gas tank skid plate. Its almost splitting into two pieces. A new skid-plate is around $250 from Jeep.

Part of the plastic gas tank is exposed. Is this skid plate totally holding up the gas tank? Are there straps holding the plastic gas tank up seperately?

The skid plate is bolted to the frame (three bolts on each side). Can I pop out those bolts and just lower the skid plate or will the gas tank come with it?

Appreciate any help. Thanks.

The gas tank rests inside the skid plate and has straps running across the top to hold it into the skid plate. The skid plate holds the tank up, the straps just hold the tank into the skid plate. The tank will come out with the skid plate. Find the heavier duty skid plate (1/8") at a junk yard and replace it with that!

They really did it that way with WJ's??????!!!!! How stupid if so.

ZJ tanks are held up seperately by straps. The Skid is the bolts only.
