Awesome! Just picked this 96 up yesterday, this got the no dash lights problem fixed. Only needed to remove the white cover on the back of the switch. A magnifying glass lets you see the connections very well, they go from looking fine to looking bad. I had to follow a similar soldering write-up on my other 96 ZJ to get the low coolant warning off! Thanks--!!!

Very simple, fixed my problem. I always thought it was the pot itself going bad. To get the thing out of the dash, you have to undo a few of the screws on the knee blocker panel to pull it down and get at the third screw on the bottom of the headlight switch.
SNIPERDUDE ! Great detail instructions. Removed my light control panel and upon examining the green circuit board & solder connections that connect the black female connector socket (the one that connects to the wiring harness), I noticed all the solder joints were dull gray. With a 10x hand magnifier I could see that the pins of the black connector were wiggling within the solder joints. I touched each of the connector's solder joints on the green circuit board with appropriate small soldering iron and solder. Once completed the green PC board was rigidly held to the black connector.
I did not touch any of the components solder joints on the green PC board as all those solder joints were fine. Only the solder joints of the black connector's pins. These pins/solder joints are the ones in a line next to the black connector.
Tested the repair last eve and IT WORKS PERFECTLY ! A tip of the hat to you !
I did the same thing the other day. mine was flickering like crazy, driving me nuts. I bid on a used one on ebay but decided to see if i could fix it myself, it works great after fixing 4 cracked solders. Was hoping someone would outbid me on my ebay one but no luck, now i have another one on the way for 15 bucks...
