Remote Keyless Entry with almost no range

Hey Everybody,

Although I've been a member here for just over a year now, this is only my 2nd post, so I should probably introduce myself and my Jeep! Ok, it's not MY Jeep, it's my girlfriend's. I'm saving my money for an '04-'06 Rubi.

Anyway, my g/f recently acquired an '04 GCL (Rocky Mountain Edition) with the 4.0L and d30/35. It's a great vehicle for the mileage, but does have some work required.

The problem I'm having is that the remote keyless entry FOBs (RKE FOBs) don't work if you're more than 2' from the vehicle. I've replaced the batteries and even placed the green electrical panel into a new RKE FOB and still nothing. I've had many Chrysler vehicles before, and the RKE FOBs almost always work for at least 80'. So, any suggestions as to what could be the problem?

Mine is the same way but I have dropped my key fobs under in water quite a few times, I'd be willing to bet your previous owner did the same. You can pick up the fobs off ebay for <$20 and they are really easy to program.

Even new though mine never worked from 80' away...

As an aside, if you hold the remote to your chin, it increases the distance. Really, try it!
To the OP: nierace is right, buy a new remote.

Are the windows tinted? If so, it'll decrease the distance dramatically.

Thanks for the response guys. Something tells me I'm really going to like this forum.

The 80' distance is what I've been able to get with my '04 Intrepid, but would require me to press the buttons a couple times. As far as tint, If I'm not mistaken, it's factory tint only.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the RKE module is in the dash. I am considering adding an antenna extender, or switching to an after market alarm.

If you want range get a remote starter...then you can start it and unlock it from two miles away.

That may not be a good thing though :P

Same deal here. 2000 GC and the remotes suck. I'd be happy if they worked within 5 feet. New batteries don't help. Is the remote worn out? Would a new one work? What's the RKE? Does something need to be done on the vehicle itself? Can the RKE be replaced?

I've seen new fobs on ebay. How easy are they to program? What's the process?

Thanks!

RKE = Remote Keyless Entry

Chrysler has several styles and you have to make sure the one you get is compatible with your WJ. To add an RKE FOB, it's in your user manual. I'd explain it, but I don't have the manual here.

tinted windows shouldnt affect the range on the RF ones, just the IR ones.

The fob on mine works from maybe 20 feet line of sight, and less if its in the building... although my kid manages to set off the panic button pretty much anywhere in the house, so it can vary.

You can only program the RF versions yourself IF you have two existing ones. Same with the sentry key, you need two current ones to add a third, or to replace one.

Installing HID's in stock housings is bad.
