On my ZJ, something got on the wheels at one point that makes the clear coat like white and has run marks in it. The coating also looks pretty bad in general - but no chipping or peeling yet. I've seen a couple articles online about refinishing them. The basic jist is to use aircraft remover to strip them** and then to clean them up with a compound and then re-spray them with clear coat. Has anyone done this before? How did it work out? I'd like to salvage these (i'm getting a 5th rim for a full size spare that I might try this on) because new wheels aren't in my budget anytime soon.
**Some say to take the tires off the rim, others say just be careful not to get it on them. Regardless, I'll be doing this with my old tires on still but I'll have the new ones on hand already. Worst case is I have to run them in after i'm done to get the new tires mounted and balanced I suppose.
