Rear spare tire mount

Does anyone make a rack that will mount the spare tire of my GC on the liftgate? I'm thinking about using the spare tire pit in the trunk for a subwoofer enclosure. I looked on wjjeeps.com but didn't see anything...I could be blind though

Such a thing does not exist for the WJ... Best bet is something custom... I wish it did though... I would love a rear tire carrier...

Crap! Is mounting it to the roof the only way to get it out of the passenger compartment? I don't want it up there, it would fugg up the already crappy aerodynamics.

Dang, I always loved the look of jeeps with the big spares mounted on the back.

Is it just the Liftgate shocks that would be a problem ? Seems that a plate could be fab'd with a backer inside the liftgate. I'll open my hatch tonight and throw a spare tire up there to see what it does.

I can only imagine the size of liftgate shocks you would need to lift a 33 to 35" tire.

There are also those swing-out jobbies, so you wouldn't have to mod the liftgate.

I'd rather not add any additional hardware like that if necessary, but if it doesn't exist....

Maybe I can get my body shop to mount a rack like the one the Liberty has on the back of it somehow.

You really can't do that becuase the WJ tailgate goes up... you would have to hold the liftgate in the air and it would be HEAVY with a tire on it. You need something super duper to not only hold the tailgate up but so it would lift up on its own like it does now!

Also the hatch is part of the structural integrity of the unibody. I would hesitate to mount anything heavy on it especially with the vertical Gs possible going over bumps, etc. You would need to get a steel rear bumper and have a swing out fabbed to the bumper.
It's not easy for ZJs either!
Roof racks really not bad. You don't have the greatest aerodynamics to begin with!

Phil

I don't want to make the aero any worse though... I just drove up north for a ski/snowboard trip and I only get 12-14 MPG on the highway... I can get up to 17-18...

I also have noticed a lot more roll when turning with the tire on the roof (kinda feels like driving a boat sometimes). I'd love to see a bumper mounted option (ahem Kevin...). TR claims they will have a rear bumper option available for the WJ later this month, but given their track record I'll beleive it when I see it.
