Rear main seal on V8...

I'm going to replace the rear crank seal on my 5.9 and was looking for any tips you might have.

-How hard is it typically to remove the exhaust y-pipe? The slip joint at the cat doesn't appear to be too rusted but it could be a bear.

-What did you use on the oil pan gasket (if anything) to seal it. I have the info in the FSM. Just looking for experience.

-Do I need to have the front axle dropped down for clearance to remove the pan? The FSM doesn't mention it and I won't worry about it if it's a non-issue.

Thanks in advance and I'm glad to be a new member!

Thanks for the link. It didn't really address the axle issue or the exhaust pipe ease of removal. Lot's of good info though.

There is no 'ease' of removal, its a beotch. I disconnected the ypipe from the exhaust manifolds (4 bolts). Hit those bolts hard with PB blaster from top and bottom the day before. Then I removed the crossmember and lowered the entire exhaust, since my exhaust is welded and I didn't want to cut it. Can't remember what else I needed to remove...draglink maybe? Maybe nothing else. I used the Right Stuff in the corners of the pan.

The 5.9 crank is fatter than the 5.2, so the seal is bigger. I wasted a 5.2 seal finding this out. I followed the steps in the FSM to the letter. You'll need Loctite Red or similar. They specify ONE drop and they mean it. It is super easy to gouge the seal when you push it through. Dunk the top half of the seal in oil and as you are sliding it through, push the seal very firmly inwards towards the crank. That will keep you from slicing it on the outer edge of the hole. Make sure you get all of the old sealant out of there. Takes a lot time and patience to do this. Take your time and good luck.

One more...

You said you basically installed the pan gasket dry (with sealer in the corners). Is that sealing well? Any seepage? I'm contemplating using a sealer like "The Right Stuff"(spread in a thin film) on the whole gasket.
