Rear Lamp Failure HELP!!

My buddy and I have been working on his 1997 Grand Cherokee. On his display it says "rear Lamp Failure" but we cannot figure it out. We thought it was the wiring for the trailer but its not. What could it be?

common problem. typical fixes: a bulb in the two tail lights and the 3rd upper brake light assembly may be a different type/brand, make sure all bulbs in upper brake light are working.

after you do that make sure that in the rear tail lights your side marker lights are not blown....if you have a blown bulb go ahead and replace them all at once so that they are all new and u wont have to worry about them for another 10 years or so

What everyone else has said, PLUS:
That third brake light may look OK with 2 bulbs working, but there are three bulbs in there (usually).

93 and 94 had 2 bulbs and 95 and up had 3 bulbs....but also they may look okay but could be the incorrect bulb....so check them to make sure they're the right wattage bulb as well

Three bulbs in my '94, hence the "usually" in my prior post.

About a mont ago I had the same problem. All bulbs were ok. Turned out that I had a blown fuse (nr. 5 behind the passenger-kick-panel) which feeds +12V to the Lights Out Module. The LOM sends +12V back to the VIC indicating status OK. When no +12V, it says 'Rear Lamp Failure'.

Try checking the fuse

Sometimes, "when" it comes on can help track down the offending or dead bulb. On my first go around, it would show up as soon as I depressed the brakes after start up. I found out about the three bulb hi-mount light that way. Sure as *****, the two outboard bulbs were dead. Started back up, pushed the brake pedal..........fixed?.....fixed!
...nope.....came back on after about 20 secs. While doing the slow burn, i pulled the two rear tailight clusters out again and finally found the marker lamps. Driverside was blown. Replaced it. Problem solved and sanity restored!!

Bulbs existing in the rear of a 98 ZJ:

Running/Stop Light 1 each side
Turn signal 1 each side
Back-up light 1 each side
Side marker light 1 each side inserted right next
to the running/stop light (194)
Hi-mount stop light 3 total in one cluster (922)
License plate light 2 total

Great thread! Now, I replace my Coolant Level Sensor this weekend and the VIC will rest quietly!

BTW, if your battery is getting old, REPLACE IT!!! I have found that the ZJ electronics are very sensitive to voltage drop. My alarm got finicky for a while and the VIC read some false indications. I don't use the alarm but, it's aggravating when it goes off (duh). New battery, problem solved! Previous owner disconneted the horn because of it. Now, my horn(s) work!

A bulb is burnt out in the tail lights or third brake light.

OK i have the answer I have the same problem if you wired the trailer wiring into the original wires and maybe cut the wires at all then ther is ur answer it relays that u have a failure because it is some how shorting out or something. I had no problems wiht my trailer hitch wiring until it some how went crazy and shorted a relay so it got tosed and before that i knew it wa s relay i replaced the light harness and just spliced it in there and it has acted up since but the brake lights and parking lights work fine... if it bothers u disconnect the box they are junk reasons y they were replaced
