Rear End Swap?

I Recently purchased a 93 Grand Cherokee 4x4 with a 2.5L 150CID 4 cylinder motor in it. The Cherokee I am trying to get road worthy is a 87 Grand Cherokee 4x4 with a 4.0L Straight 6 in it. The problem with my 87 is that the guy I purchased it from tried to repair the rear end and failed miserably. I was wondering if I could just pull the rear end and maybe front end from my 93 and bolt it into my 87. Any info would greatly be appreciated.

Grands never came with the 4cylinder.

If it's a regular Cherokee, then it'll swap right over.

Make sure that both vehicles have leaf springs, if one has coils, and other leaves, then it won't work.

Also, make sure that the gearing is the same. The 4cyl should come with 4.10 gears. The 6cyls came with 3.55. If you need this car to drive to work or something, then you will be able to drive it, but in 2wd only, or you risk breaking more stuff.

Basically if you're on a time crunch, then swap just the rear and run it in 2WD.

If not, then swap both front and rear axles and then you can use 4wd.

Plus, if you swap the 4cyls to the 6, then you'll have lower gearing and better off-the line torque. Just make sure to swap speedo gears so your speedometer reads the correct speed.

zj's come with a 2.5L?? holy ****! does that engine option include Fred flintstone and a hole in the floor?

Nope, that's XJ's, but they must graduate by driving 20 years in the salt belt.

hahaha i wish my ZJ got the fuel mileage of a 2.5 lol. yea and they didnt make grands in '87 either. iluvtruenos- i believe all XJ's have rear leaf springs and front coils right?

no you don't, the 4.0 5spd gets better economy than the 2.5l.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

get it no matter what if you got the money to spare, they're RARE!

nah i think he knows they are. its only got 96k miles on it and he wants 3200. i would have to sell my ZJ to get it or sell my civic and throw some cash on it
