Nothing is "cheap" in axles let alone our obsession with jeep

Does it matter if it came out of a 1995 2wd explorer, Do they still come with 32 spline axles and what ratio?

gears and install kit 300$ easy.

tools to install aren't cheap. labour at shop = expensive.

got a friend who can do it? with all the correct tools and knows how to do a gear setup? buy him pizza, beer, women, etc.

to do gear setups right is a pain. and many times you don't notice its wrong right away; its 6 months to a year down the road.

white lexie all explorer diffs are 31 spline. gear ratio could be anything. pull the cover and look. it is the only way to confirm what axle has what.

a ring and pinion for the 8.8 on summit is between 159 and 179$ and yes i know a transmission mechanic im not sure if he knows diffs though. What ill end up doing is matching the front eventually unless i luck out and its a 3.55 8.8 rear. It's an xlt awd and it has a leather interior. Not sure it has lsd

my dad said its not legal to put spacers on the rear wheels, so i could get the rear wheels offset 5/8 instead of spacers, what will happen if i just leave it 5/8 shorter per side? My dad is a long time mechanic and is recommending me not to put spacers in but said anything is possible, but then if i got the offset wheels i couldn't rotate my tires.everybody i ask is telling me not to use spacers and 5/8 is too much to space.

Gear ratio isnt a big deal, so long as it has 31 spline axles. I think that I have found a steal on one off a 1995 2wd.

You can get gear sets for that cheap but you get what you pay for.

if its more than 5$ its not a steal.

you will be FAR better off knowing what ratio you have, and finding an appropriate 8.8 with the same ratio.

unless you are going to completely rebuild axles with new ring pinion, bearings etc.

xcaliber, wheel spacers are fine. just make sure you use locktite on the bolts holding the spacer to the hub and hand tighten them to the appropriate torque. take your time with these things. make sure they are tightened correctly etc. they are just fine.

last word for now; regearing an axle, even if its out, will likely come to 300$ - 500$ thats without labour. then keep in mind you are asking a mechanic/friend what ever to do about 500$ worth of work, using 1500$ worth of their tools, to save you money.

all i'm saying is this is a lot of work...... plan accordingly maybe your mechanic dad can do a gear swap for you! family HAS to help lol

I already asked my dad and he said he could probably do the ring and pinion swap. I am probably going to do whats seems right and get 5/8 offset wheels for the rear.

I was just looking back at my 8.8 build, I got NIB Yukon 4.56s for a little under $200 from Desert Rat Offroad. I know some people who have bought cheaper gears (Nitro, G2 and the like) have complained of excessive gear whine, I haven't heard or experienced that with my Yukons. If Desert Rat has them for that price get a set, everywhere else I've seen them they are $250+

I went with OE Dana-Spicer up front. Yukon would be my second choice.
