rear axle locking up

Hi Have a 96 grand cherokee auto with quadra trac transmission. When reversing slowly or moving forwards on full steering lock the rear wheels are ratcheting around with an associated noise....feels like the transmission is winding up and one wheel is trying to catch up.
Ive replaced the axle as i was told the limited slip was defective, but the replacement axle is doing the same......surely this is not normal? Im worried im going to bust the transmission. any thoughts? Many thanks

You have the Quadra-Trac Transfercase (aka: NP249), not transmission.

Sounds like your VC (Viscious Coupler) is shot. The VC is what transfers power from just the rear driveshaft, to the front. You have threeoptions:
1) Replace the VC.
2) Replace the entire transfercase with a junkyard NP249 TC
3) Replace the entire transfercase with a new Command-Trac (NP231/NV231) or Selec-Trac (NP242).

Neither the 231 or 242 have a VC
