A rattle, a moan, and a little rythmn.

Hi from Dallas,

I just came across this board and I'm hoping some of you guys can help me out. I have a 96 GC 4wd with the 5.2. Recently it has started making a metallic rattling sound from beneath the front. Going over bumps causes something under the front end to start clanging around like it's loose. I have spent hours beneath the Jeep and can find nothing. Around the same time the brakes started making a lound moaning sound when they are applied making left turns. Again, I can find nothing wrong. New pads and everything seems tight. I know the GC's had a recall for the brakes but the Jeep dealer said this only applied to "salty" winter regions. Anybody else had this type of problem?

Also, in neutral when I hold the gas pedal steady the engine rythmically surges up and down. When I let up it almost stalls and then picks back up to normal idle speed. Vacuum leak perhaps?

Sorry this is so long. Any advice is greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance and have a good one! J

Hey Texas96, can't offer any advice on what it might be but I have the same problem. Mine seems be coming more from the passenger side.

I'll ley you know if I find anything as I'm taking it to the dealer this week.

On the rattle, Does your jeep have skid plates? Check to make sure all of the bolts are still in. I had a bolt come out and cause a rattle in the front passenger side of the jeep. I also had a rattle when a rock got stuck above the skid plate. Don't know if that is your problem but it worth a look.

On the brakes, I would take it to a shop like Midas and ask them to give you an estimate on fixing the problem. They will take it for a test drive and tell you what is most likely wrong. After you get an estimate, you can decide whether to have them fix it or do it yourself.

On the rythmn thing, Sorry, I never could get the rythmn thing right .
