question switching switching 4.7 to 4.7HO

alright i've got a question thats been buggin me and hopefully someone can tell me some info, i've got an 2000 grand cherokee with the 4.7 non-high output that blew up last week, and i've been searchin for motors and i found a nice one locally but its out of a 2004 and is a high output, i'm just wandering what i gotta do to make this motor work in mine, they both have the vin # with "N" in it but they have that tone wheel on the crankshaft and mine is a 16 tooth wheel and the HO is a 32 tooth, but i'm not sure so any information would be greatly appreciated

Assuming that you plan on using your present PCM and wiring harness, you will definitely need to make sure that HO engine is using the same crankshaft and camshaft tone wheels as the standard engine. If not, then they will need to be changed. Your present PCM will not recognize the HO knock sensors even if you add the wires and connector needed to get the sensor signals to the PCM. That means that the higher compression HO engine will have to be fed premium fuel in order to prevent pinging.

You could try to use the HO wiring harness and HO PCM. But, there are enough differences in pinouts and wires such that, even if you can get the engine to run correctly, other systems like the AC won't work properly. I know someone who tried to swap engines and use the HO harness and PCM, but he finally gave up.

I just searched through my thread when i was going over options for replacing/rebuilding my engine.

This is what i was told: "our computers say newer won't work, because the tone ring on the crank for timing are different, you better stay with the right application, 1999-2000". If you have a 99-00 you need to stick with either a 99-00 engine. if you have an 01-04 engine you need to stick with a 01-04 engine.

This confirms what you were told, but Ken has an HO in his '99 that the dealer installed so you CAN get it to work somehow.
