pulley noise

if the idler pulley was bad what would the noise be, i hear a whining coming from the front end going up with rpm speed most noticable in first gear

It would be that noise. Take a look at the pulley. See if it has started to eat itself.

mine does it too how easy is it to replace that bearing?

I wish I kept the bearing number! I bought two bearings (they are both the same on mine) then banged out the old ones with a large socket and then pressed the new ones in with a vice.

Yours are $ 15/ea at rockauto. The pulleys are constructed poorly on our Jeeps. So if you do a bearing swap, then do it with caution as these pulleys get distorted easily

The pulley is bought as a unit. They are about 70$. Take the belt off, unbolt the old pulley and bolt the new one in. Make sure you don't strip the threads.

Hmm..I noticed a squeal comming from mine almost everytime I start it up. It goes away quickly..so I never paid it much though..now I will have to take a closer look.

Pulley unit $ 15 on rockauto. But two and replace the serpentine belt, if needed.
