Problem Starting

So this morning as I got up for work and went to start my Jeep it started and then died out. It will stay on if I hold the gas though. So I held the gas slightly around 1000 rpms for about 2 minutes and waited for my engine to warm up a little, since it was slightly cold outside, but right after I let off the gas the engine died out. So I called AAA to see if they could tow it to somewhere. Turns out the guy shows up in a pickup truck?!?!?
He tells me they don't have any wreckers available right now, but he's know's exactly what it is...yeah, after three wrong guesses I pointed out that there was crack in a sensor by the oil filter (right behind/below the filter, a round small gray sensor had a crack and the top part(sensor) could be pulled right out by the wire). First does anyone have any idea what this sensor is? He said it was some sensor that told the cylinders when to fire. And I was probably getting misfires.
However, to make a long story short I took finally got it to start and stay on, and drove it quickly to the nearest service station. They have it right now, but just called and said that the sensor that guy was talking about was some sort of oil sensor! So I don't really know what's wrong with it. Just wish I could find a trusty mechanic, since I live in an apartment complex and can't do too much work on my own.

Any input would be appreciated.

The oil sensor diagnosis may be right. If it's showing no oil pressure,it shuts down the engine

the pressure was normal. When I tried to start it first all the gauges flucuated...like the speedo went up to 60, and the tach went real high alos. But when I had the gas pushed in the pressure was normal. Keep the thoughts coming...

My oil sending unit is bad and at times registers no pressure. It has never shut the engine off however.

Where is the oil sending unit located at in the engine? Cause the sensor that is cracked is right by the filter. When the engines on, it looks like there's a little piece that's rotating around inside of it? I dunno...I just want my JEEP back!
