Price Check on 46RE oil pump seal and rear main

1998 ZJ 5.9, 46RE that shifts great, serviced regularly for all 150,000 miles.
Got the Niner at the shop getting my leaky 46RE worked on. The shop comes highly recommended from guys in my Jeep Club. I know that the rear main has been seeping for a while now, and now it seems the pump seal has bit the dust.
The shop owner called me today and said that the pump seal is in fact gone and he'll need to remove the tranny to get the seal replaced and while they're at it replace the bearing and all o-rings inside. Seeing the tranny is out he wants to replace the rear main as well, I agree. He quoted me $600 labor and parts.
He said an hour to get the trans out and an hour back in, about 45 mins to get the pump taken care of and another 30 mins or so to do the rear main = 3 hours total. $330. add in around $150-$200 in parts and we're pushing $550. So he said worst case scenario - $600.
Does this seem right?

Sounds pretty reasonable for a transmission R&R and rear main replacement.

Thats really cheap. I do all the estimates for the transmission shop I work at.

R & R time approx 8 hours ( that's book time, not real time )

8 x $89.50 per hour = $716
Rear main and front pump seal are like $100

Sounds like a bunch of crap to me if he says an hour to pull the transmission and an hour to put it back in. Transmission shops make alot of the profit on R & R of transmissions

It doesn't take long to pull the 46RE. My uncle and I did it in two hours, not rushing. He's an ASE Master Tech. 8 hours sounds ridiculous to me. The 249 doesn't have to come off, and you dont even have to remove the rear driveshaft, (the front is already out).

Book time. That's how 99% of shops do pricing. 1.5 to do pads and rotors even though it takes 20mins. Almost every transmission is 8+ hours

Dodgeram is correct, any shop charges by book time, not actual time. 8 hours is total R&R though, 4 hours out and 4 hours in is for the average person doing it. This is the best universal method for every shop to use. Sometimes the book gives more than enough time, sometimes it's right on, other times the mechanic gets burned because it takes twice as long as the book says. A lot of times you get guys that are willing to move things though in volume and charge less than book time because they know it won't take that long.

I understand how book time works at a dealership, I listen to my uncle piss and moan about the service writers and book time constantly. I swear mechanics are the most unhappy people ever. Glad I'm getting a good deal, my fellow club members said he was very reasonable. I usually do all my own work or have my uncle do it, but he's in the middle of remodeling and moving into his new house and I don't have time to have the ZJ down for more than a couple of days. I have to drive it to Canada on Friday and I'm not driving the TJ as it doesn't have enough room and isn't nearly as comfortable (or fun to drive) as the niner. He quoted me me $350 to rebuild my 249 (I have the new VC, eBay for $40!!!!!!) with chain, bearings and seals. If the trans is done well I'll have him do that next.

Got the niner back from the shop. $660 after tax. Had the oil pan seal replaced, rear main done (oil change). Oil pump in the trans rebuilt, trans service with a new mopar filter, adjusted bands, and steam cleaned all the crap off the bottom of the drivetrain. Shifts awesome, a little firmer than before and seems to shift into overdrive better, maybe because it's got better pressure?
All in all, I'm a happy customer-took a week to finish it, but great service and always kept me updated day by day. Also found out this guys father built the transmission in my Dad's old pulling tractor (alcohol injected 454)! That was in Maryland, there's a picture of it on the wall in his shop!! Small world...
