Is your jeep in love with you?

Isn't red the only color a vehicle should be?
If at first you don't succeed, use more speed.

I had the same symptom; it's been silent since installing a new power steering pump.

2003 WJ in Jeep Green Metallic, 4.0/242/4.10's. 4" Teraflex springs w/ RE monotube shocks and IRO short arms, cheap intake w/ amsoil filter, 2.5" hi flow cat and back exhaust, lots of lights and other misc crap.

First i'd check if you have power steering fluid. My was doing the same thing for about a year till my pump gave out and i had to get a new one installed.

Yeah mine was low. Why i think its the pump, previous owner didnt know you had to keep up on fluids.

Unfortunately the pumps are expensive.

Power steering hoses, if touching, will moan as well. Make sure the hoses are not in contact with each other. Sometimes you have to shift them around a little in the engine bay. (Pro tip - Keep them away from pulley's and fan blades)

i changed my fluid and my moan pretty much went away. I sucked out the reservoir with a turkey baster, refilled, started engine, turned wheel a few times, shut off, and repeated about 5 times.

Someone put ATF in there, it was a nasty color and it made a horrible whine. I replaced the fluid with Prestone power steering fluid, says it supposed to stop squeals (red bottle, got it at walmart)

Probably not the most efficient way to change fluid, but it was easy, and i wasn't worried about introducing air into the system, since i was only emptying and refilling the reservoir.

ATF shouldn't have mattered.

The pumps are $65 plus $40 or so core charge at Advanced. It comes without the pulley (another $20).

It cost me $15 to get the pulley pressed on (do NOT install it using a hammer) and about 45 minutes to remove and replace on my 5.9. This job was made a little easier with the efan, and because the tensioner on the 5.2/5.9 is much easier to work with than on my 1998 4.0.

Definitely not a job I would pay to have someone to do if you have basic mechanical ability.

The WJ pumps are more money and they are a common problem. They are NOT to be filled with ATF. Wjjeep.com states you must even use the mopar fluid. Mine whined after using the mopar fluid so I changed to the RP fluid and it stopped whining now. I know the pump is somewhat hurt but it seems to be quiet now to where I dont hear it with the hood closed. They all revised the resevior for the pump on the factory pump but its very expensive for the pump assembly. Upwards of $600. You can check around for a JY pump but the chances of it whining too are probually good.
