Power Steering Failure

I replaced the pump and gear about a month ago. Today, I put the hammer down to merge onto the expressway and lost power steering after that. I drove the 5 miles after that without power steering. The fluid is at the right level and there are no visible leaks.

Has this happened to anyone before? Is it the pump or the gear?

It is cold up here (around 0), but I had been driving for over an hour before this happened. Any ideas?

Start by inspecting the power steering bracket. If that breaks then you would feel a sudden loss. It's also possible you blew a seal in the pump. Inspect the pulley well too.
