Possible TC issue

Ok, I believe my issue is dealing with the transfer case. I have a 96 limited, so I am assuming that this is a 249. I just have 4hi and 4lo, so thats how I made the assumption.

When the car is warmed up, I am getting a ratching sound when I make turns.

My question is regarding cost to get this fixed, and is this something that a beginner mechanic could acomplish?

My buddy had his VC replaced and it cost him about 1200.00.

Sounds like a CV joint to me..
VC is more of a feel than a sound..
Cv's can be had for about $80 each or so and are very easy to change.. If you want I can do a write up.. On it...

My VC had a nice sound and feel.I still think it's the VC.


Do you have the noise when driving straight?

Not saying its definatly not the V/C but I think if its making a ratcheting sound in turns it s more likely the CV's .. They would make a clicking sound.. The V/C would just engage and make a jerk.. But you are correct. Sometimes they do strange thinngs..
And make strange noises.. Noone is going to have the exact same experience..

Take it to a mechanic and get him to drive it around and see what he thinks it is.. Most shops will offer a free diagnostic..

I don't hear it when Im driving straight, and it seems to be louder when Im making a slow or sharp turn. I'm going to take it in this weekend for a diagnostic check.

I too think it is the CV joints, I had mine done under warranty, otherwise $550.00

Could be the vc causing the cv joints to go bad. If you replace the cv's, look closely for the signs of a bad vc, otherwise you will be replacing the cv's again.

$550 for cv's??? Did it come with asparin for the pain?
