popping from rear

When I stop, then let off the brake while turning, I hear a popping noise from the rear while rolling. It will pop several times with an increase in tempo. As the pops get closer together they get quieter, until you can no longer hear it. When stopping and releasing going straight I do not hear any noises.

I have to come to a complete stop to reproduce the problem. If I'm coasting I can turn either direction and not hear the noise.

I can feel the jeep moving with the first few (louder) pops.

Tonight I plan to do the "jack it up, grab the tire at 6 and 12, and shake it like it owes you $10" test. What else can I look at?

Do you have a locker installed? It sounds like you are discribing a locker. They disengage while turning at slow speeds. Alos check the u-joints.

Well that would be my recommendation. Jack it up and look at the u-joints and pop the differential cover to look inside.

would a locker pop more after the car has been drive for a while? and under a load, like towing a trailer?

Sounds like your limited slip and or ring and pinion are toasted. Pop the diff cover and see.
