PO456 - ( very small ) EVAP leak ..

P0456 (M)
Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (very small leak)

i have checked my gas cap and it seems to be on fine ....

the engine light came on a couple days back .. so i " loaned " a code reader from AUTO ZONE >> got the light off .....by reading the codeand then erasing .

never came on yesterday and didnt throw any codes yesterday ..

today no engine light .. but the code is being read again . .same code

what else can i check .. ?

i dont want to have to be worrying about the engine light over and over and over and over again ..

A leak is a leak. Try carefully removing the rubber O-ring and flipping it over, or buy another gas cap. Your leak could be anywhere but this is where I would start.

you wont smell any gas from this leak.
It's basically a vacuum leak.
check the lines on the evap canister. check the canister itself for any hair line cracks and what not. i highly doubt its the canister itself but its worth a shot.

Couldn't tell you on the WJs.

On the ZJs its right behind the bumper on the drivers side and you can see it from the wheel well.

It could be the same on the WJs. Someone else here needs to chime in on this one.

I had the same thing a while back. I tore the canister apart and tried to clean the little filter. I played with the pump parts, and put it all back together. After that, the code just went away, and it has not come back in about nine months or so.

I had the check engine light come on... and decided it was time to buy the Actron CP9150 reader to deal with these mystery codes and save a trip to the dealer.

Code PO0442 and PO0456 both showed up "Evap Emission Control Leak" Thanks to the above tips, I has able to locate the leak/s. Several short 5/16" hoses to the unit had cracks. This is on a 4.7 2002. The lines run on top of the engine, near the driver's side firewall to the unit on the fender.

For a foot of hose and the cost of the reader, I bet I came out ahead of taking it in for service. And I think the reader will be very handy on the Jeep and other vehicles I own.

Keep up the good work.

And remember what Ranger Bob says "don't tease the bears, they ain't got no humor gland."
