Please Help, NV242 transfer case clicking

Transfer case clicks. the harder on the brakes the louder the clicking, doesn't matter what the transfer case selector is in (2hi 4all etc...) only seems to click while braking, not on deceleration or all the time... hopefully you guys can give me some insight. thanks

thanks in advance, mostly wondering the exact culprit, how I can test, and If I can rebuild, or will have to replace.

Are you sure it is the TC?

I had a terrible clicking noise right after I had my tires balanced. After a while of looking turns out the idiots at Sears didn't tighten the lug nuts either to the right torque or at all and all I had left when I found it was three lugs on the front right wheel. On the gas...no clicking, off the gas...lots of clicking.

Not saying that's the culprit, or that you'll be that lucky, but maybe something to check.

Havent heard of a transfer case clicking, I would check the front driveshaft u joints and rezeppa joint if you have it. Mine made some clicking sounds that were only noticeable with the windows down on small streets. Maybe you only hear it when decelerating because there is more stress on the front end After I lifted it and wheeled for a month, it changed from subtle clicking to what I and others describe as "A bunch of angry sparrows".

Have you checked the driveshaft and/or tried running without it?

does the chain turn when vehicle is not in 4 wheel drive? seems to me like it would only begin to turn when the planetary gear engages it when 4 wheel is selected this is happening in two wheel and 4...

I think it does spin all the time. If it is not engaged by the gear in the TC, then it is turning when the front driveshaft is turning, and that is always turning.
Check the Universals and shafts for loose joints. Wheel bearings can also click.

i will check, the noise is right under the shifter, i know noise can project on a vehicle, but im 95% t case and it sounds like a couple cards in a bike spoke.

Mine clicks too, but I have a 247. mine also smokes when I push it too hard while 4 wheeling and in 4 low. I'm replacing with a 242HD soon which is what i wanted to do anyways.
