pics of homemade front recovery brace
Just finished welding this up tonight, will post some pics when I get it mounted up, still undecided on adding a 2" reciever, the whole thing tucks up in with no loss of ground clearance at all, if i do the reciever it will come out the center of the bumper and I'll have to cut out 1 verticle grill piece.[IMG] [/IMG]

Think it will be strong enough for recovery?

what model?
On a ZJ i would tie it into the holes for the towhookes, and squash the frame between the bar and a plate

It fits my 95 ZJ, the cross brace ties into to core support where the lower bracket for factory tow hooks would go (4 bolts) and the main brackets bolt up where the factory belly pan mounts (3 bolts per side). I put the monting ears to locate the tow hooks in the stock position.

your mounting brackets are in the EXACT SAME location as the brackets as on my front "hidden hitch" only difference is that the steel on yours is WAY thicker, how thick is that???
BTW, it looks great, and i think you should do a 2" reciever.

looks great, what kind of recovery are you putting on it D rings or hooks? that main brace looks like atleast 3/4 stock that thing must weigh about 40 lbs. put it on the scale before you put it on the jeep i want to know now.

Well it may be a little overkill, but it's what I had laying around so i used it. The metal is 3/8 I didn't have any 1/4 but better too strong than too weak, and the cross piece is actually 1"x2" rectangle tubing 1/8" wall.
Today I welded a reciever to it and painted it up, I'll get another pic with it bolted up soon.

Andy, If you look at the design you'll notice the cross piece doesn't do much, the pulling force is applied to the frame brackets, the 1x2 rectangle is actually quite strong, same stuff most hitches are made from, the reciever itself is usually 1/4" wall, my mopar hitch in the rear is 1/8 wall and the tube is square.

sorry your 1x2 looked like it was solid to me i guess its not as bad and yes if the main pulling force is applied to the 3/8 then it will be plenty strong. looks like you did your HW congrats.

All finished it came out just how I planned I couldn't be happier, nothing hangs below the core support, just had to slightly notch the bumper cover. I'll be useing it soon to drag my boat out of storage.
