PCV/CCV Valve Question 4.0

Im tryin to clean my engine up (on the inside) today, so i went out and got some CCC. Well while at the stealership, the guy at the parts counter asked if i was gettin any oil blowback onto my air filter. I told him i was (2 airfilters a year almost) And he suggested replacing/cleaning my PCV valves, and to replace the hoses that are on them. Amazingly he didnt try to sell me them, only showed them to me on a diagram and said to clean the out with some throtle body cleaner or whatever. He said something like....a bunch of carbon and stuff builds up in them and cleaning them out will help the engine run better. I didnt think they were called PCV valves on the 4.0. I thought they were called CCV valves or whatever.

Well before i start pullin hoses off,

Is this something i can do/ should bother doing.
How do i take off the PCV valves or whatever their called on the 4.0.
Would it be easier to just replace them?
What kind/diameter hose should i use to replace the hosing?

Thanks Thanks.

Dylan.

Im throwin a pic up to show what i mean incase ive confused everyone.

PCV = "Positive Crankcase Ventilation"
CCV = "Closed Crankcase Ventilation"

Same thing, since the engine's ventilation system is considered to be "closed."

The 2 hoses, elbows and grommets are fairly cheap at the dealer..

Probably cost ya around ~$35 for all of it..

I've heard that those grommets on the valve cover can be brittle and tend to break up when the elbows are pulled off. Be careful and try to keep stuff from falling into the valve cover.

atleast replace that rear grommet and 90...i just did the rear one on my jeep (before trading it for an s10 ss)..i got the ccv 90s from the dealership (about $7) and the rubber grommet from advanced auto the HELP! products i believe. i didnt have to replace my hoses they werent in that bad of shape but urs looks like they need to be replaced, id just get everythign from the dealership its not that costly. the front grommet and 90 looks good but def. replace that hose and do the back grommet and 90...they are both considered ccv not pvc..pvc 90s have a valve inside it that opens were as ccv have a little hole in the bottom of the 90 to regulate the pressure..

Good luck getting them off with out breaking them. The only one that really need to be cleaned in the one in the back near the fire wall. It has a small orifices that gets clogged. Also the reason for the blow back many times requires removing the valve cover to clean the inside of that out.

On a scale of 1 - 10...About how much of a PITA is that to do. Like is it something i could do in my driveway or is it something i outta take somewhere. Like Is it a matter of just a couple of bolts to take it off, or would you have to move the fuel rail and some other things.

Any ideas on the milky orange fluid comming out of the front one?

i recommend replacing the CCV + PCV + BOTH GROMMETS every 30k miles, or every time you tune=up, something like that.

(grommets harden up over a short amount of time, and can cause a vacuum leak by air seeping in between the valves and grommets, as there is no longer a good seal)

i first found out about it here:http://jeep.off-road.com/jeep/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=257985 when i had my ZJ.

idk if someone mentioned the hose you should replace, but please dont buy those hoses at the dealer (over priced). buy some rubber fuel lines instead.

No need to remove the fuel rail..

But theres more then a few bolts holding the cover on. Its tricky getting it in and out with the rear ccv elbow in place. So remove the old one and wait until the cover is installed to insert the new one.

Get a good valve cover gasket. felpro makes a rubber/metal one that seals much better then the cheap cork one.

The metal, rubber one wouldnt be something available at an auto zone or something would it.

And can anyone direct me twords a thread with cleaning the valve cover. I know its probably simple, but i dont want to find myself messing something up.

Thanks alot.

Yes.. Although it had to be ordered.. It was like ~$35 or so..(Felpro Permadry VS50522T) but worth it in my opinion.

I cleaned mine with brake cleaner.. Get some engine degreaser and a brush and have at it..

Mine came off no problem. Just twisted counter clockwise 90* and they came right off. That didnt stop them from bein in bad shape. Anyone know the measurements on the hose for the front one? Im tryin to get that hose from somewhere else, but i dont wanna get the wrong kind.

pcv and ccv valves

its been awhile so u probably have your answer already but.... the pcv and ccv valves are not the same. the pcv pulls in clean air where the ccv vacuums out the bad air to be pulled backed into the combustion chamber to be burned since these are gases that are formed within the engine and must be recycled back into the system to be burned.
