Thats kind of a big area, you're probably going to have to match the paint unless your paint looks exactly the same as new, then you would be able to order the paint from Mopar.

I would really consider bringing it to a autobody guy if you really want it done right, I'd guess about 300 to fix just because matching the paint is a pain.

You can always use touch up paint but it proably wont match perfectly, you'd still be able to tell there was a scratch there. If your goal is just to prevent it from rusting and make it less noticeable but not look perfect this is a bit cheaper....

yea it looks terrible now, ill get a pic up for you tonight, it looks like some salt or something ate away at the paint, but i just bought the jeep recently so i wouldnt know, i dont care if it exactly matches, i just want it to look better than it does now, should i use touch up paint or do i have to order a bunch of paint from mopar?, do i need to do sanding and if so what grain of sand paper should i use?, and finally, how many coats of paint do i need and do i need to clear coat it, and if so, how do i clear coat it?

thanks,
cory

Do you have a paint gun? I hope you aren't thinking of using touch up paint or can spray paint to touch it up, those would both look like crap. If it is just white on top of black it is probably wax buildup and just needs to be polished off.

Let us see the pictures, but really I wouldnt mess around with it if you dont really have any experience, unless you dont intend for it to look perfect and intend on learning, I would spend the $ and bring it to a autobody guy.

It could be like what Arlo said...

I have a can or two of color matched mopar spray paint for my jeep. The color is perfect.

The body is only 5 years old...and there is really only minor fading. The paint on the jeep is good.

For small stuff the touch up paint works alright, like chips and crap, you might be suprised Arlo...but even if your paint is in mint condition its hard to blend it perfectly.

If given the choice between slightly mismatched paint, and primer / bare metal I'll take the slightly mismatched paint.

I have white, so it's usually not that obvious, I've spray canned a bunch of parts on my jeep just to prevent rust until I can have the whole thing shot. A little rubbing compound or wet sand and it's hardly noticeable.

Black on the other hand, good luck.

I'd probably do it anyway, worst case you can have that part stripped and professionally done later, at least it will look better than a gray strip now, and might prevent more paint from chipping or peeling. When I've done the spray can (mirrors for instance) I sanded the mirror smooth with some wet/dry paper and some water then sprayed a bunch of light coats. The spray paint i used sucked and it was a little bumpy afterwards, just had some 3M marine rubbing compound on hand and hit it with that by hand. Nice gloss and real smooth, after that put some wax on it and it looked good as new.

I have an HVLP gun now, just need to get the balls to order the "good" paint so I can re-paint my bumpers.

Leave it alone, as someday you will ultimately become gray.
