If given the choice between slightly mismatched paint, and primer / bare metal I'll take the slightly mismatched paint.
I have white, so it's usually not that obvious, I've spray canned a bunch of parts on my jeep just to prevent rust until I can have the whole thing shot. A little rubbing compound or wet sand and it's hardly noticeable.
Black on the other hand, good luck.
I'd probably do it anyway, worst case you can have that part stripped and professionally done later, at least it will look better than a gray strip now, and might prevent more paint from chipping or peeling. When I've done the spray can (mirrors for instance) I sanded the mirror smooth with some wet/dry paper and some water then sprayed a bunch of light coats. The spray paint i used sucked and it was a little bumpy afterwards, just had some 3M marine rubbing compound on hand and hit it with that by hand. Nice gloss and real smooth, after that put some wax on it and it looked good as new.
I have an HVLP gun now, just need to get the balls to order the "good" paint so I can re-paint my bumpers.
