Paint is deteriorating away

Has been for a little over a year now...started with just two spots now nearly the entire roof minus the center for some reason is all oxidized and the clear coat is chipping away.

It hasn't been a big priority for me but I'm sure its going to start creeping down to more visible locations...the hood has one small spot already. At the moment taking it to get painted just doesn't seem like a good way to spend my money considering how much longer its gonna be a DD (2 years or less).

Is there anything I can do to repair/stop/slow it down? I do a good wax twice a year and wash it at a carwash (not touch free, the full package polish rainx stuff hand dry).

I have the same issue (but much, much worse than yours). I have asked numerous professionals their opinion, and been given the same answer every time - once the clearcoat starts cracking, the only solution is a full respray. I would love to do it, but financially it makes no sense.

Plasti dip it? It would be cheaper then respraying it.

does anyone know what causes this to happen? I have seen lots of cars in my area with this problem but nothing i have owned has done this. I have had cars with pretty neglected paint jobs and nothing like this has happened

I'm at a loss. Now I will say that when my dad had the car (since it was new), he didn't use real wax when he "waxed" it, he used that NuFinish car polish stuff (even says no wax on the bottle). It was always parked in the garage for most of its life up until about 3 years ago when my dad bought the new subaru and gave me the jeep. At that point, it sat outside in the Houston sun almost 24/7, and the spots only started to appear after I had it (even with regular washing/waxing/first car babying).

I find it odd you can see how the center of the roof is still fine, and the places where the roof racks are are fine too (i moved the front one from its original spot).

Perhaps it has something to do with maybe when my dad used to wax it, he overlapped on the center and it got just enough extra to protect it? Though my dad was always very sure to wax the roof well since even he knew it would take the biggest beating from the sun.

I found it a long while back and I thought maybe it would be an option as a summer project. If you click some of the update links, you can see even 3 years later the paint holds up great. Opinions?

if your factory paint didnt hold up to the the uv damage i would say this doesnt have much hope, and would take forever to do

My ZJ looks exactly like yours except mine is flaking off on the hood.The center of the hood is fine,but the sides are where the problem lies.The PO who was the original owner said he noticed it starting to happen a couple of years after he bought it so that would be back in 97.Said Jeep wouldn't and didn't do anything about it for him:thumbdown:
The link you provided was interesting,but it looks to be very time consuming.At this point I've learned to live with it since the truck is 18 years old now and adds a little "character" to it:rolleyes:

i wonder if it had anything to do with paint quality or defects at the factory? I notice they have major problems with paint sticking to the plastic bumper. Mine was so bad i was able to strip it clean with a pressure washer when i repainted

I agree bob,I think it was a factory defect.I too can take the clearcoat off my bumper with a pressure washer.In fact most of it is off now and I have a nice dull finish:laugh:

i was actually able to strip it down to bare clean plastic. the one that came on my jeep the paint was alright but it was broken. it was a 97 from the junkyard that the paint would just strip off

My paint isnt peeling like yours, but mine actually cracks off. I got into an accident where a lady side swipped me and hit the front mirror and brought it so far forward it cracked the paint underneath. I also have a spot between the fender and the rear bumper (in the gap so it's not visable) that just chipped right off, clear, paint and primer. I used a touchup paint so it wouldn't rust. Wish the paint and clearcoat was thicker lol

EPA standards for automotive paint changed in the late 80's and caused manufacturers to change over to an unperfected and unproven paint system. This is why most cars from the late 80's to mid 90's have serious paint issues.

Honestly, given the value of these vehicles, I would just vinyl wrap it. The overall flat shape of ZJ's should make it fairly easy, even for a novice. Expect to pay $300-$400 for enough quality vinyl to do the entire vehicle.
