Like if the water pump came apart and distributed itself throughout the engine?

Or just a general buildup of crap in there?

Either could be possible, but if it was the water pump you would definitely hear/see something wrong with it.

Just check your relay first, it fails on every 4.0 WJ at some point.

Just a "what if" question:

If my water pump did come apart, I don't want to run the engine, right? Wouldn't it send bits all through my coolant system?

- Rick

It's already happened if that's so. But that didn't happen because your water pump would have been making awful noises. I'm 99% sure it's your Fan relay.

if your water pump came apart you would not have any circulation, and your engine would keep heating up until it stalled. I still think it is your fan

Well... it was the relay. I can't thank you enough for advising me towards it. Saved me some time and money.

Here is what I did to fix the problem.

Removed grill, fascia, and headlight*****. Someone else had already cut a hole in the plastic...

I cut the relay harness and made my own harness extension.

I soldered ends onto the original harness, connected, and insulated.

New bracket with new relay:

Installed:

I was a little afraid of vibrations, so I zip-tied the bracket to the battery handle.

Fired up the Jeep, no codes, no lights, no dings...

Test drive was flawless, fan functioned perfectly, temp fluctuated between 195 and 205.

Thanks again for the help.

- Rick

*****Edit: You don't have to remove the fascia and grill, just the headlight. I took mine off because I was also installing tow hooks.*****
