Need a bit of help here guys, on my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo the output speed sensor has went bad, found the part at the local auto store, ready to install......
now here is my problem, Where is this thing located and how do I go about installing?
Anyone have a nice little step by step instruction page (with pictures ) they could send me to?

On mine the Sensor was located near the bottom of the tranny, near the cross member. I have the 22re transmission, and only has one Sensor. Other transmissions have an Output and a Input sensor, I would say that is you have a V8 you have two, but could be wrong. Another thing is to have the new sensor in hand when removing the bad one, as trans fluid will come out, have a pan under there.

Look on the driver side, to the rear of the transmission fluid pan. Since you have the replacement in hand, you know that it screws into the transmission, that it has a hex head and what size it is. Find something similar screwed into the transmission and expect to find a cable plugged into it which you will unplug for installation of the replacement. Your '98 transmission has only a single sensor.

Thanks, still have to find the time to replace it... BTW I have the 4.0 l6 , my only other question is this how long can I go before replacing?
I don't want the tranny to go out, I have noticed a slight stall ONLY when first started and it seems to rev high between 1st and 2nd BUT then again only when first started...could this have something to do with the sensor?
Thanks again, TelX

IIRC the speed sensor is on the Transfer Case on the rear tail housing.

I would replace it as soon as possible. Mine was going bad and left my wife halfway across the highway. It started back up and went on, but the tranny started just refusing to shift.

It only takes a matter of 5 min to replace. I suggest doing it as soon as possible.
