output speed sensor circuit malfunction

Hey guys, im a newbie, last week i got a check engine light and since i work everyday i didnt have time to get it checked out until the weekend, so when i drove back home from work on friday, about 80 miles, it was working fine, when i went to go somewhere later, my transmission would not shift into 2nd, it would only stay in 1st gear, i would hit about 30 at about 3500 rpm and if i press the gas more itll stay at 30 and the engine will just rev with no speed increase, i went to autozone and got the obdii reader and got the code for the output speed sensor circuit malfunction. i am wondering after doing a little research that maybe the sensor is not letting it shift, since the sensor is on the transmission. im thinking maybe it is in limp mode or something. is my problem the transmission or can it just be fixed with the sensor? by the way, its a 2000 grand cherokee v6

Yes the sensor is most likely the problem. You could have a look underneath and make sure that some debris did not hit the cable and sever it and make sure that the harness is properly seated.
