opps...

4.0 ZJ, was out changing the oil and filter, couldn't get the filter off so used a chain socket, 1 minute the wrench is turning at all, the next its decides that I don't even need a wrench, long story short the wrench broke off what I believe to be a oil pressure sending unit. I further confirmed this by having fresh oil and a new filter yet no oil pressure with the engine running. Weird thing is that I have yet to have a CEL. My question is, I know its stupid to drive around, but how much damage will it do just driving to pick up the part. 2nd, since its broken off can I something get a socket wrench and remove it, and with that in mind, what eles comes off. I have a cd manual but the diagram sucks ***. and finally, does anyone know the rough cost of the part? Thanks

I've never had to swap out the sensor itself, but from what I recall the part is very cheap and supposedly an easy fix.

Driving with the sensor off will be fine, the engine is still getting oil the gauge is just unable to recognize it. Just make sure you haven't sparked any leaks in that area which would prevent the oil from reaching the top of the block.

well I stick my finger in to make sure there wasn't any oil in there, I even let the engine idle and revved it, still nothing. I'm just worried that without anything resisting the pressure that it could cause damage. I just have this image of that seal bursting open and oil going everywhere. I had actually flushed the engine as well (which I might add makes it seem like a whole new engine) dumped in some mobil 1 high mileage and matching filter, can't see any leaks.

I found 1 ebay auction with a used part for 15 dollars, which makes me believe jeep wants about 100

went out and checked again, engine seems to be running perfectly fine but I don't know how I would see if oil is reaching the top of the block since afterall I don't have a working guage.

Ive done this before. Its ok to drive around with it. I dont believe any oil acually touches the sensor. I think it a vacume operation sensor. But i would say to leave the end in the block until its ready to be replaced. Removing it with a socket is fine. But installing one you should use caution. They seem to be pretty flimsy units.

the cd manual I have lists a "special" tool, but to me it looks like I jut need a really deep socker, that or a good wrench. What about when removing the metal part of the sensor that is still there. Should I expect oil to come gushing out everywhere

It shouldnt come gushing out. Mine didnt. You can use a pair of channel locks to get the old one off if you want. Just be careful.

I'v already snapped it off at the base where the plastic cylinder part meets the metal bolt. I don't think I can do much more damage
