Oil pump gasket necessary??? 5.9

Bought an oil pump for my 5.9 at napa and I'm wondering is the gasket that comes with the pump necessary there wasn't one when I pulled the old one out?

No. Many people don't use them because if they break apart, the pieces may clog an oil passage.
