Oil Leak - Main seal cost$

Does anyone know how much it would cost to have the main seal replaced. I get a 1 to 2 inch spot on the ground right under area where trans and engine come together.

1995 5.2ltr 106000 miles.

Thank you

JK

The lowest I have seen it done for was < $500 in my area by a diesel truck shop.

I helped a buddy change his on his driveway. Never doing it again unless the Jeep is on a hyd. lift.

I have noticed that the price is strongly influenced by the experience of the people in the garage. Those that have dealt with trucks often tend to charge a few bones less in price.

This is the guide writeup we used to help us (if you want to know how its done):

You may want to check your oil pressure sender for leaks. My oil pressure sender and intake manifold gasket were allowing oil to leak down the back side of the engine. It looked like a rear main seal so I pulled the flex plate cover and didn't see any leakage from the rear main seal area.

Pulling the flex plate cover isn't hard and you can check the seal that way. Replacement of the seal itself takes probably 6 hours if you haven't done it before, the 5.2 uses a 2 piece seal.

Great info. Thank you all. Upside, just wondering about the oil pressure sender; could this leak and still give a proer pressure reading?

Thanks again.

My rear seal also leaks, and it will leak until I get rid of it, oil is cheap just keep filling it up as needed.

I guess it's common. Not sure I ever had a car (American made) that didn't develop this leak.

I asked this awhile back, thought I would share my thread. I went with the Lucas rear main it worked pretty good. I sold the jeep about a month later so I do know what came of it.
