OEM LSDs for ZJ?

Hey All,

I have been scouring the internet for a friend looking for info on what ZJs came with any kind of LSD carriers. I am a long time WJ guy and have had VariLoks in several vehicles but know that because of the tri-link rear control arm and vehicle width, a WJ -> ZJ diff swap is more work than it is worth. I have heard tell of ZJs using VariLoks, TrackLoks, and even coming stock with Detroit TruTracks from the factory... Can anyone give me some first hand advice on the subject? I specifically need to know:

1. Which Year and trim levels had LSDs from the factory (so I know what to look for in the U-Pull)
2. Did ZJs have locked D44a's like the WJ or something else? D44? Chrystler 8.25?
3. What were the options for LSDs/ Gearing combos?
4. Your opinion on the best option? This is a '93 4.0 with the AW4 and a 249 (currently. probably going to get a 231 or 242 this summer). He uses the Jeep for snow plowing which is why he wants the LSD. If we was building a WJ I would already have all the info for him, but I have only owned one ZJ and i didn't build it. It was just a daily for a few months. I appreciate any wisdom you can throw my way.

Thanks.

They came with a dana 35 in 1993... LSD was an option. If it has the up country suspension I would have to assume it has the LSD.

Later V8's (after 95) got the dana44A.... All 4.0's got the dana 35 rear.

You can weld the control arm mounts of the ZJ axle onto the WJ axle... Just toss the tri link connector and crap.

No lockers and all that jazz...

LSD was part of the tow package, not UC. It's less common to find LSD in the d35 than the d44a.

You wouldn't want to use a WJ axle as they are a different width, don't have compatible ABS sensors, and have a different wheel bolt pattern.

All V8's got 3.73, most 4.0 got 3.55, but 4.0 with a tow package could have 3.73. Second gen V8 has the d44a as stated.

All ZJ LSD's were Trak-Loks of various flavour - never a VariLok or a Detroit from the factory. LSDs were more commonly found in tow-packaged vehicles, but not exclusively so - technically a Trak-Lok was an available option for all rear differentials and gear ratios, although a 3.55 LSD D35 is extremely uncommon. Your best bet is to either spot the extra metal tag on the diff indicating the need for special LSD fluid (attached to one of the cover bolts) or find a (fairly rare) '98 5.9L as they all had 3.73 LSD D44As (but used a 1330 U-joint instead of the standard 1310).

Tell your friend install a lunchbox locker into his open d35 carrier and call it a day. Since the ZJ isn't seeing heavy offroad use on large tires, the d35 will handle the locker just fine. I see no gains in swapping the old ring gear to the lsd carrier, buying new bearings & shims, and rensetting backlash. OEM LSD is pretty much useless anyway, only a minor traction upgrade over open diff.

Thanks everyone, this is exactly the info I was looking for and had been unable to find through various searches. I feel like a 3.73 D44a would be a good bet. The U-Pull near me has at least 1 5.9 and several 5.2's. As soon as this dern snow welts, I'll get out there

My 94 4.0 with tow package has the D35 with no LSD and 3.73 gearing....

Maybe its different with the 5.2??

The d35 is pretty unusual to find with LSD, even with tow package and 3.73. It was possible, but nobody has figured out the rule.

The vast majority of all XJs and ZJs sold in Finland came with LSD rears, no matter what trim level, tow-pack or not, etc.. It is very uncommon to find one without LSD. Heck, I searched for an open D44a carrier (so that I could install an Aussie locker) for almost 6 years before I found one

That makes sense for that market, and there are areas of the US that got similar treatment, but it's not universal.
