Odd noise...

I am experiencing some very odd noises coming from the back of the engine compartment only when I take off from a dead stop fast or going up a steep grade. It sounds like 2-3 BB's(bb gun) have been put in a can and then shaking the can.

jeep specs;
97 laredo
I6 auto tranny
98k

Another question: Is there a sensor on a torque converter that can malfunction?

Thanks alot!

Joshua

Sounds kind of like exhaust rattle. You might check the connection between your exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold.

Another option is it might be spark knock. That normally means a problem with the timing. That is a deeper noise, though, than what you described. It perfectly matches the description that it accompanies acceleration, and is common >100K miles.
