OBD II error code 1762, anyone else?

Hi, I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the dreaded service engine light on. I ran a scan and received error code 1762, which in my manual stated,
Override Band Failed Off
Has anyone ever had this? What did you do to clear or fix? I have heard that a selonoid in the tranny needs to be replace at about $400, does this sound about right? Don't want to be at the mercy of a mechanic or dealer without knowing ahead. Thanks in advance
