O2 sensor? probably the 10,000th thread

hey guys im sure you get this alot, i have a bad 02 sensor in my 01 JGC limited and i have a check engine light on, i had it checked and it is the sensor after the cat. does this sensor really affect the engine much? what does it do to affect the engines performance, i havent really noticed anything different since when i bought it a month ago, i get about 12mpg around town and 19-20 on the highway. will replacing this sensor help my mpg and performance. also i have a problem with an idle which is not steady sometimes 500rpm sometimes 1100 rpm it tends to vary, could this sensor be causing this? now for the big question where i can i get this sensor for cheap and is it different than the one for the 4.0l. also is the one before the cat the same as after the cat?

thanks alot guys

In a WJ, a downstream (after the cat) O2 sensor is used to fine tune the mixture, besides measure cat efficiency. As long as the upstream sensor works properly, the downstream sensor has very little affect on performance or mpg. That sensor has nothing to do with your idle problem.

Getting a cheap O2 sensor is not a good idea. A Mopar sensor from the dealership pays off in the long run and you don't have to cut and solder any wires to connect it to the wiring harness. In the parts catalog, each of the four O2 sensors has a different part number. The sensors are probably identical, but the pigtails that connect the sensors to the wiring harness have different lengths.

Kolak (kolak@aol.com) has good prices on Mopar parts.

Thanks for the recommendation. Just to remind everyone, I offer JeepForum members a 25% discount off what you'd pay at the dealership for all genuine Mopar parts.

Hi Kolak,

What would the two upstream mixture O2 sensors run me, including shipping to Houston for an 02 WJ Limited with the 4.7?

for your idle problem, try cleaning your IAC.

All four sensors should be replaced at the same time on the 4-sensor systems. The downstream sensors do their fair share in terms of influencing the mixture.

Send me a PM if you'd like a quote for the sensors.

I have an 04 WJ I6 with the engine light on. MPGs are tankin and the WJ idles rough several times a day... Engine light comes on and off (I am in my car all day). Had autozone scan it and said its running rich or lean on one bank only. Possibilities: defective o2 sensor, ignition misfire-repair, fuel injector problem.

I am hoping its a sensor. Had the fuel pump replaced 5K miles ago, 133K on the WJ.. How do I tell if I have the 2 or 4 o2 sensor set up without getting under the car? Thanks for any help...

Really, I never had an O2 sensor after my cat, just one before. I only have a total of 3 - O2 sensors. I have the 4.7HO and I know it has a different exhaust system from the factory. Other than my manifolds and the down tubes back to the O2 sensor is stock, the rest has changed. But I never removed a fourth O2 sensor when changing my exhaust and cat......

You definitely have four O2 sensors, or at least you're supposed to unless one is missing. There are two upstream and two downstream sensors, one before and one after each precat.

All WJs with precats do not have an O2 sensor at the main converter. They're all located adjacent to the precats.
