NV3500 + 231 Tcase worth it?

Okay So I found a the trans I need for 200$ and the guy wants another 250$ for the T-Case, so 450$ for the whole deal. The only problem is that the Transmission is stuck in 3rd gear, not sure how bad it actually is. Its coming out of a 1998 Dodge ram that rolled over. Is it worth the prices for both?

**EDIT***
I Should also mention that this whole set up is going to be taken apart by him and he will actually deliver it to me.

231 tcases go for around $125 to $150 most of the time around here.

Sounds like you have been using junk transmissions. Properly rebuild the auto or get a reman'd unit and it will outlive the Jeep.

Good luck with the swap.

Thats the thing I went to a shop with probably the best reputation for rebuilding trans. They have been here since 1985. Everyone always says how amazing there service is. They were surprised to hear that my trans to a dump and were curious to find out why it did, but they wanted 2k for it, which was nice of them to give me a some what discount of the usual 2.5k for most other people. I told them not this time.

That trans can either be easy to fix or very expensive...you can usually get low mileage salvage 3500's for 500-750$.

Replacing hard parts gets to be high money on those. Bearings, seals, and synchros are usually 500$ for the full kit. Forks, rails, and gears can really blow that out of the water.

The ram only has 90k miles on it. That's why I jumped right on this deal. I'm asking peoples opinions whether I should buy this for the 450$ and risk the NV3500 being busted or hope for it to be an easy fix.

Pass. Being stuck after a roll is never a good sign.

Alright Will do. Shame though It would have been such a nice deal if the transmission worked. My search will continue.

Thanks.

OP , just curious , did you or anyone ever remove the check valve in the trans line ? Those valves are infamous , they clog , stay shut , and cook your trans .

You may spend more than 2k for an NV3500 swap ...

If at first you don't succeed, use more speed.

I asked them to change my trans lines, I'm sure they changed the check valve as well. They are a very good shop. I had them do our Mazda Protoge, cause my brother decided to burn the trans. If it survived him for 50k then he totaled it.

LordHobbit~ I'm doing the swap my self, and if all goes well I should fit with in 1000$ + or - 200$

It won't. I did everything myself as well. I was over 2k with all said and done

700 for low mileage 3500
250 for headers (needed)
125 in misc exhaust tubing and the y-merge (not counting glass pack and carsound cat)
50 for used fly wheel
15$ for used manual trans crank sensor
600$ for hd clutch kit
25$ for trans mount
75$ for zj pedals
125$ for zj clutch kit
20$ for used dodge starter
15$ for dakota shifter
15$ for various boots to cover the holes
125$ for novak shifter (jeep tcase shifters don't mount to the 3500's bosses)
75$ for 5.2 5spd 98 dak ecm(you won't need that at least)

50$ Drive shaft from an xj for my front(barely fits due to lift, it's long)
75$ Drive shaft from an excursion for my rear, cut down and to go with the 8.8.
00 gauge wire for extending starter wire
Misc scrap steel to make trans crossmber and adjust height of the mount.
Lots of welding time on the exhaust and cross member
Drilling the crank for pilot bearing
Got to do some floor cutting
Got to bend the shift lever (the part the goes to the tower) to clear the dash.
Then the drive shafts need altered the 3500 is almost 7" shorter than your current trans.

Well I went and bought it for 400$ both NV3500 and the NV231D. After I bought it I went to Wendy's to eat lol. I Checked it if really doesn't shift, Turns out it does. Those guys were trying to shift with the snifter that was stuck. I took it off and shifted with my thumb. Has all 5 gears and reverse. Looks like I got a steal . He gave me the Flywheel and the Clutch for free. All thats left is a Dodge starter, Headers. My parts list is almost done! Then Gotta get the drive shafts re sized and do the entire exhaust.
