NV-249 to NV-242 ?

I need a new Transfer case. I have a 98 5.9 L and would like to change the quadra trac to the select trac. I see the other post and it looks like I can change just transfer cases. Does anyone know if it is a direct bolt in replacement or do I have to change anything else. Also if the 242 would be able to hold up with the additional HP of the 5.9 L. Any help would be great. My vicous coupler is gone on my 249 transfer and it only has 85K miles I would rather put a transfer in that doesnt have it and like the option of running in 2wd.

great question! do you think the 5.9 would be quicker in 2wd? I hear dodge truck fans claim that full-time 4wd is the only thing keeping the 5.9 from taking an R/T truck.

Isn't the Quadra-Trac transfer case set up to run at 80%rear 20% front anyway? I wouldn't think there would be any power difference either.

A friend of mine once test drove a 99 Limited V8 that had Selec-Trac in it. It was from Canada. Needless to say it burned rubber.

Well guys I talked to someone at New Venture Gear and the only think I have to change is the shift bezel. I ordered the NV242 HD wich is a Heavy Duty version of the 242. I am expecting a little more power to it after the switch. I let you know how everything goes and may take some pics of it while im doing it.

If you don't mind...How much did the 242 cost? I'm looking at doing it too, but was thing about going thru a salvage yard to get it. I've heard that I may have to swap input gears between the cases to get it to work. If the price was right I might just order a new one and be done with it.

quite frankly i'm surprized you don't have to replace the driveshafts. every time i've heard of someone doing this it has involved switching drive shafts because ones of a different length are required.

I have gotten a price of 790 for a remanufactured 242 HD. I was told the drive shafts would be the same and from what I can see from all data they look the same. I was told to make sure the main gear is a 23T. If it isnt I can swap mine from the 249 but I called and am getting one with the 23T. I will let you guys know for sure how it goes when I get the 242. It will be next week.

Sorry for the delay. I have found out now that I need a new Trans. as well. Most of my noise prob. goes away when I turn the OD off. I have ordered a new trans and that will be in on Monday. 1546.00 for a trans from Chrysler. If anyone thinks I should put a dif. trans in I would like to hear what my options are. A friend of mine is ordering the trans thru his shop so it is why im getting a pretty good deal on it. I also get 3yr 36,000 mile warr. with the new trans. I will know about the shafts from the transfer on Monday when we are putting the transfer and trans in together. I will take pics and post results on tues if everything goes well.

Well, with the 5.9 you have no option... It has to be a 46RE. However you could get a custom 46RE at APS... not cheaper, but much better.

Just wanted to keep every one interested up to date. I am still waiting for a new 46RE from the stealership. For some reason they are having trouble getting one. It was supposed to be in on Monday and it is now Wed. with no Trans. in site. I will post as soon as I hear something.

Could you tell me where you bought it? Are the $790 with or without your old 249 as core exchange?

A friend of mine works for a mobile station and ordered it for me. He got it at the stations price with was alot cheaper than retail. I was supposed to get my trans. from the Dealership on Monday but it is now Thurs. and they dont have any idea when im going to get it in. I found a trans. online but the price is pretty cheap and the Warrenty is not very good at all. It is from Phoenix transmission reman. It only comes with a 6 Month 6,000 mile warr. The warr. does not include labor. I am supposed to get a trans from the stealership for 1500.00 reman. it comes with a 3yr 36,000 mile warr. and includes labor. Anyone know anything about Phoenix trans.? Right now the jeep is just annoying driving and hearing the noise. It runs great and shifts great. I just dont want to get stuck somewhere. I am also towing my boat wich is 5000 lbs this weekend over 400 miles round trip. Oh well we will see if I make it. Thanks for any suggestions or help guys I will keep everyone posted.
