NP249 T-case dying & want to swap to a NP242 or NP231

I have a '98 ZJ 5.9L & my NP249's had it. I've read the pros & cons of the 231 & 242 and have decided that although I off road quite a bit, I'd rather have the NP242 because I DD this a ton.

I take that the NP242 will just bolt in? ( I know, besides modifying the linkage & shift indicator) Which year/make donor would it be best to get it from?

you'll need to swap inputs as the v8 transmissions have longer input shafts on the tcases.

get it from a 97+ zj or xj.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

I thought I might have to swap inputs if the 242 came from a 4.0L, but wasn't there a NP242 option in the ZJ?

They did make them for ZJ's but I think only for the 4.0. I had a 231 in my old 93 4.0 ZJ but it crapped out.

You may have to swap input shafts, I didn't, but I needed a shorter rear DS from a ZJ that came with a 242. Try to get the case from a '97 or '98 ZJ.

Not true.

OP has a later ZJ. If you get the 242 from a later ZJ you will not have to swap input shafts. With the later ZJ, the 242s do not have the cone looking housing for the output shaft, instead they use a boot so I would also ask for the rear driveshaft from the vehicle the TC came out of!

Now you can understand my confussion. Thank you. I will look for a late model ZJ with the 242 then & not mess with splitting the case.

Wow...I could smell the misinformation and hearsay from a mile away - stinky

96 and up is what you're looking for (most likely). However, you really won't know what input you have until you have the old case on the ground. .840" exposed input shaft should be what you see on the 97.

Also - some 96-98s had the exposed tailshaft (booted driveshaft), some had the enclosed tailshaft (cone on the rear of the case). You need to make sure you get the same for yours in order to have the best chance of success.

In short: for a 96+, you need to look for a 96+ donor. Input shaft length should be .840", and match the output type (enclosed or exposed).

You can do an earlier case and swap inputs, but it's not a fun job...not a hard job, just not too much fun.

Not even for Canadian beer? Have got some good single malt scotch as well????? Am afraid we wouldn't get much done!!

Yeah, but there ain't no 3.2 north of the border...

Most American beers need 5 to make up the alcohol content of 3 Canadian beers.

(unless of course he bought it here, in which case it isn't truly Canadian beer)
