NP249--Np242 swap

I installed a NP242 in my 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 , everything was cool until it started leaking fluid betweeen the trans and t-case. Upon further inpection the input shaft on the 242 is shorter than the 249. I tore down the 249 and took the input shaft out of it to replace that of the 242. All seems good there until the snap ring that goes on the end of the input shaft wouldnt go on. The input shaft of the 249 uses a narrower bearing. I think i just need to pop the bearing out of my 249 and install it in the 242 case, either that or use the whole front case of my 249 on the rear of the 242 case. My planetary gears on the 249 were shot, but the input (annulus is in good shape, which I need for an input gear. The input gear of the 249 fits in the 242 planetary and feels good, however the input gear from the 242 does not fit in the 249 planetary. Dont want any problems, anyone else seen this. Would I be better off buying a planetary set for a 249 and using my whole front case.

What year is the 242 TC ? When the cone is upright you have to pull up on the shaft in order for the snap ring to fit. Make sure the input shaft is fully seated and the TC is in 4 low.
