NP242 - Shifter Tab length

I've searched the conversion page so many times my eyes are spinning and I've tried looking through the numerous pages that come up with the search feature.

I am ready to swap in a NP242 to replace my 249. The donor transfer case didn't have the shift tab. I know the 249 tab is longer so I can fab it to make it work.

Question being, can anyone tell me what the measurement is from center to center for the tab on the NP242? From the mounting shaft/nut at the case to the center of the hole for the shift linkage?

A bit more advanced perhaps is does anyone know if the indexing (position of the tab on the transfer case) is the same on both the NP242 and NP249?

My sincerest thanks to any one that can assist!

For simplicity's sake, I'd say go to the JY and get a tab off a 242. IIRC, it's about an inch shorter than the 249. I'd go out and measure mine for you, but work sent me to the middle of Ohio for a job. Sorry.

I hear ya. Unfortunately JYs aren't in my schedule. Much easier for me to fab off of my existing tab actually if I had the length. I won't be doing the swap till next weekend so I have time. Just like to have my ducks in a row so to speak.

I hear ya. I'll be home Saturday. If someone doesn't measure one for you by then, I'll see if I can get up there without pulling off my skid to get the measurement for ya.

Will measure mine tonight. Have a 242 on my shelf ready to replace my 249 when I've got time and motivation

Some photos:

The slot appears to be at 45 degrees to the tab.

Distance between the threaded stub and the link center is a bit more than 1 3/4 (maybe 1 25/32)
Overall tab length about 3''

Hope this helps

Shaban, I can't thank you enough! Perfect, above and beyond!
I owe you a beer or three!

I'm assuming the transfer case is in 2-hi position pictured?

Just did this swap, and you need to be prepared for some modifications to the linkage rod that connects at the T-case, took me 3 hours to get it to shift into all positions

Any words of advice other than what's posted in the sticky? I'm expecting to have to go through and adjust the linkage length, etc.

Not sure about the position. I've rotated the tab clockwise all the way to clear the front yoke, so I think it was in 4LO.

lil joe, I'll keep an eye out for it. Appreciate any info you can supply.

shaban, makes sense. I recall the most forward position being 4-lo.

Install the transfer case with it in neutral, shift the tab back by hand before the linkage is connected to it to 4 low, loosen the "set bolt" that locks the adjustment for the linkage, connect the linkage, move the shifter into 4 low, and tighten. With the help of a buddy under my ZJ, it took me 10 minutes to work the shifter to get it properly adjusted. There are plenty of threads on here for doing so.
