NP231 vs. NP242 vs. NP249

How much lower does an NP242 and an NP249 hang down than an NP231?

I was looking at TC skids on Rusty's and it says on the site that you need a different skids for different TCs.

It says NP242 skids have a "ed.-bend" to make room for the NP242 TC.

The front output shaft area of the 242/249 case is slightly larger than the 231 case.

Not sure with the 242, but the 249 hung a little lower than the 231 I swapped in. Was only about an inch. The 249 is definatly more bulky than the 231 though lol.

okay with that straight...i don't like not having a 2wd option...i just like to have more control of my options. anyway, what would be involved in switching from a 249 to a 242 and how easy is it to get my hands on a 242? it'll be a switch down the road but prolly will definately happen

i would say search for it because so so many people have done it, but the search will omit "242" and "249". you can pretty much get any 242, the drive shafts just have to have the same spline count, so you may need a shaft or two from the vehicle you take the 242 out of. Also, you may have to take the shells apart because the front half of the cover of the new 242 might not bolt up so you have to use the half from your 249. just a couple common swap problems...

think of the 242 as all the options the 231 and 249 has put together. correct me if im wrong, but with the all time 4WD on the 242, you cant use it at all speeds so it isnt exactly the same.

You can use full-time at any speed. You're just supposed to shift into/out of the 4wd options below 55mph.

i think on the 242 there is a "part" and "full time" 4 wheel drive. the full time should be the one you can use at highway speeds...its for wet pavement and the such, on my dad's XJ thats what he uses for snow ice and rain, and im pretty sure thats 4 the higher speeds...if i did have that i wouldnt be going over 70 on it anyway.

if that "full time" is the same as my 249's AWD (4 all time as it reads on the bezel) its okay for speeds past 120 mph thats been proven by me....lol
