not overheating, but getting hot.

In the past week with temps in the middle to upper 90's my jeep has been running around 210 (it never has) it runs at the line before 210. It has been blowing tons of antifreeze out of the overflow and I can see the antifreeze and water boiling inside. My jeep has also been acting up. Today when idling in park the temp was at 210 and it felt as if my jeep was shivering/shaking. Also my rpms would bounce around at the same time and without the shaking as well. My motor has 234,xxx on it and as far as I know it has never been rebuilt. It runs very strong and oil pressure is around 45 pounds. Any ideas? A stuck thermostat maybe? It was replaced last year. Would that cause the shaking? Cleaned my IAC about a year ago...thanks!

Might be time to clean the iac again just for good measure. Possibly see foam it and run some lucas oil in the engine. Thats easy stuff i'd start with first.

Guess I will start with the IAC. I I used seafoam probably around the same time. I always run Lucas. Its the best! I'll try the IAC. I'm most concerned about the shaking so I'll start there.

What's your oil look like? Any chance you have head gasket issues?

Uniblurb 06-11-2013 03:06 AM

210 is normal operating temp and it's what mine runs at all the time. But you shouldn't have anti-freeze coming out of the rad and boiling in the overflow tank. Maybe time for a new rad cap and then a thermostat if that doesn't fix it.

Running at 210 shouldn't cause shaking and a whole separate problem. Double check you don't have a vacuum leak somewhere along with the problems others mentioned.

My oil doesn't indicate a head gasket problem. Looks normal. Not milky in any way but my engine does have a lot of miles so maybe its the start of something with the gaskets. I'm going to go get a new radiator cap in a minute and see if that works. That would be nice! I'll grab a new thermostat as well just in case. I'll clean up everything today and do all that was mentioned by everyone and let you know. Thanks everyone! I'll update you soon.

I got a new radiator cap. So far the problem hasn't happened again. Question though. The new cap has a red lever to release pressure. Do these work when you have a recovery system?? Some guy said those caps don't work with a recovery system...but so far so good....

minimika2008 06-11-2013 05:03 PM

Overflow...sorry I call it recovery for some reason.

I've used a cap with a safety release lever on nearly all my vehicles. You won't have a problem.

Glad it's working so far and you probably had a weak cap or bad rubber seal in it. The pressure relief lever won't cause any problems as was already mentioned. Still don't pull the lever though when your radiator/coolant is super hot. Good luck.

Thank you everyone who responded. I appreciate the help. I'm glad you suggested simple fixes first. I think I got lucky!

Sorry to thread bust this.. but after driving 220 miles in my 5.9 the other day i noticed when i got back to the city my Jeep was idling weird like it was jumping from 200-750rpm up and down.. So while at the light i turned the Jeep off and back on and it was idling fine after.. Is this the IAC ? I have cleaned it before in the past not too long ago actually as i believe it was doing this before.. Should I just look into buying a new one ? Will aftermarket work ? I know aftermarket TPS's dont work wortha damn but what about IAC's ?

tucsonzj 06-12-2013 11:15 AM

IIRC you can use aftermarket IAC's no problem. My guess is IAC but i'm not expert.

PolkaPower 06-12-2013 11:18 AM

Whenever I go to a JY I try to collect all the sensors I can find for spares.

Candymancan 06-12-2013 04:16 PM

I did that with the TPS, but i couldnt get the IAC the screws kept stripping so i said f it
