No speedo/odo/cruise control

Without any warning, the speedometer, odometer and cruise control in my '98 JGC all quit working. The Check Engine light has now come on as well. I replaced the speed sensor (two wire) located on the transmission housing, but it didn't correct the problem. I've been reading other posts and they mention that the speed sensor is mounted on the transfer case. Did I replace the wrong sensor? Any ideas what about what would cause this?

Where was the sensor you replaced located on the trans? The speed sensor should be in the T-case.

Did you take it under water? I took mine through 2 ft once and they quit working and came back a few days later.

The sensor I replaced was located on the driver's side of the transmission. The device on the transfer case is roughly 1.5 inches in diameter and has three leads on the connector. It's attached with a "crow foot" clamp to the case. That's the only other device I saw. Its that the sensor? Everything was working fine when I parked it.

the three wire unit is the vehicle speed sensor. This is what tells the speedo how fast you are going.

Thanks for the info. When I went to the parts store, the only speed sensor they had was the one that fit to the transmission. Does the sensor on the transfer case go by a different name?

They're the same, I'm almost sure. The 2wd model's have it on the tranny, 4wd's on the TC. What's the CEL for?

Success! I found the sensor on the transfer case and the black wire was severed. Fixed it and everything works fine. Thanks Guys!!! Will the Check Engine light reset by itself eventually or is there a way to reset it? Thanks again for the help.
