NO Overdrive, no codes, 94 Grand I6

Since I've bought it, never had O/D working, 94 grand cherokee with I6, I've pulled the codes, originally only had a cruise control code which the brake switch fixed and now I just get the code 12, which is no big deal.

Why would it not throw any codes if my O/D is out? Is there any way to diagnose this without taking it to a shop? The only thing I can think of is replacing the TPS, but I'm not having any other issues, so is it worth 35 bucks just to swap it out and see?

Definitely feels like it's starting in 2nd gear, and only shifts to 3rd, so it's slow as dog **** right now, turning out in rush hour is scary.

I've heard the TPS, and also shift solenoids, but I don't know where to start.

Might be over heating... That'll cause OD to go out with no codes. But if it starts out in 2nd when cold, then you might have bigger issues. Have you checked the fluid? Shift bands? TV cable?

Have you tried manually pulling the shifter down into 1st and see if it starts off in first?

It's definitely not overheating as it will never go into od. It feels the same and very sluggish whether I manually shift it down to 1st or just put in drive

My 95 4.0l has an issue where it has o/d for the first 10-15min of driving. Then it stops going into o/d. Started a few months ago. Put a trans cooler in last week, didn't really help. Fluid is full and clean. Thinking a shift solenoid is heating up and locking up.

Well, took it for a short trip today, tried putting it in 1st manually, and it worked, manually shifted to 2nd just fine, then put it in D and it shifted to 3rd just fine, 30mph roads, so I didn't test OD, literally drove 1 mile, parked, delivered something, then left it in D, felt like it still started in 2nd, tried to manually put it in 1st at a stop light and it didn't feel like it went down to 1st this time, so i'm really confused.

How easy is it to adjust bands or any other general transmission maintenance compared with other general motor maintenance stuff?

Its not the bands and its not the TV cable. This is a shift solenoid or relay issue inside the transmission pan and even up inside the valve body. Its not hard to do but you can sure mess up a transmission if you don't have a clue what you are doing.

Is your OD switch lit up when your driving? if so this would indicate a fault in the transmission control system. On my 97 I installed a transmission from a WJ and because the tranny temp sensor was a different resistance then a ZJ I didnt have OD. It is all resolved now. Also under normal acceleration at 45 mph OD is supposed to activate.

I have the same problem with a 98 4.0 zj. No first or od. Have to start in 2nd then manually shift to 3rd. Has to be electrical... Fluid is the right level and not burnt... I was thinking pressure gov. solenoid but not sure. Could be a bad connection... Just gotta get under and check.
