Newbiee Question?? - grand cherokee thumping question

Alright... I am a newbie only posting once before. I bought a 97 grand with a v8 and installed a axle from a 98 5.9L. I was told that it would bolt in no problem no mods at all. It turns out that the drive shaft to axle U-joint is bigger on the 5.9L. I swapped the U-joints back to the stock 5.2L avle U joints, But now I am Test Driving The Truck and as I hit Bumps it is clicking or thumping from the rear end. Are these two axle's both 3.73?? Also, as i Shift from N to R and Back to D there is a thumping noise maybe from behind the front seats or the rear axle..... when I drive down the road there is a howl from the rear that sounds like woah woah woah....ell Me worst case scenario so that I can make an easy fix...

Do I swap axles again? rebuild current axle from 5.9L? replace drive shaft to 5.9: specs? replace replace NV249 Transfer case from the 5.9L? or the standard transfer case from the 5.2L? please let this guy know?? Geoff

You need what's called a combination U joint with 2 caps bigger. The way you're running now mimics what happens when a U joint is trashed, noise vibration etc. The axle side of the joint is not centered because the joint is too small.

Find a parts guy that knows U joints and tell him the situation. He'll sell you a 1310 combo joint after looking both trucks up.

good luck with the project
