New transmission

Anybody know if there is a standard.transmission that will bolt directly up to a 98 4.0 im tired of the auto and its also going out

nothing easily.

93 red ZJ 190k 4.0. Spent more money than I should have ...

Isn't red the only color a vehicle should be?

AX15 would be the stock 4.0L manual trans in most jeep products. It wouldn't be a particularly easy swap - could you even get a stick in a 98 GC stock? Better off just rebuilding the AW4.

42RE, AW4 were only in 93-94 ZJs and 87-01XJs.

98ZJ, 4.0,242, 8.8 Detroit, hp30, 3.5" lift, IRO LA's 4.56's, 33" Firestone MT's, custom rear bumper, ARB front, Engo E9000, factory skids

Well then maybe an AW4 swap would be an idea. Definitely a better transmission.

you can only run a 42RE without not getting cel codes. the TCM is in the PCM and there is no way to override or bypass it for a 5 speed.
