Haha I could afford a lift, but I want to see how it does stock gas mileage-wise before I spring for anything like that. I'm not expecting anything too high of course... it will be getting all terrains of course, likely some BFG AT T/A's or General Grabbers.

I'll have to do some more hunting around and see how lifts hurt mpg - I know they do. I really like the way ZJ's look with a 2 or 2.5" lift with 31's....

and thanks Bullwinkle! I'm looking forward to it! Other project is an '85 BMW 6 series, so I'll have a pretty happy garage, one fun go-fast car, and the Jeep

When you do look for tires, I'm running treadwright warders (bfg tread in retreaded tires) several around here running the companies tires, great stuff for cheap. Bb lift can be easy, want my pucks when I get my springs on? Lol

Update! Got the Jeep!!!! I'm loving it already, extremely comfortable and Richmond's roadwork projects no longer knock my teeth out like they did in my old car Sure does like gas around town, but on the highway it seems do do okay. Averaging around 16 so far with a heavy bias towards around town driving. I'll be looking at the injector upgrades as well as some free flowing 3" exhaust and intake in the near future to see if I can squeak a bit more out of it.

Several small issues it has now that I'm driving and living with it....
  1. The interior lights like to dim randomly when the headlights are on. It's not related to the automatic lights; they work perfectly, just the interior. I took apart the dash and figured the issue seems to be fixed when you press on the unit in the dash. Loose solder joints maybe?
  2. The Infinity sound system probably has about 3 speakers still functional...so it sounds depressingly bad. I'll need new speakers. Just going to repace the stockers and keep the stock head unit most likely. Not much of an audiophile.
  3. Some decent brake squeal; chalking that up to a low mileage 16 year old vehicle that hasn't been driven much, so I'll check out the pads and rotors next weekend.
  4. Sunroof is intermittent. I tried blasting the switch with some electronics cleaner, and it sorta fixed it...but I'll likely get a new switch.
  5. The tires are quite old and fairly dry-rotted, so new ones are in order very soon. I'm looking at options now, and so far like the Firestone Destination AT's, General Grabbers, and BFG TA KO's. I'm leaning towards not doing the BB lift; so I'll likely run 29" tires, unless someone can verify that the mpg hit really isn't that severe?

Now the larger question I have, is regarding that 249 transfer case....I had the mechanic check it out, but this is my first time testing it for myself. Around very slow, sharp turns, it does bind some...not severely, and if I give it a decent amount of gas around turns, the issue is nonexistent. It feels like a vehicle doing sharp turns in part time 4WD. Everything else is smooth under normal operation and at speeds above 5 mph. Is this normal for the 249, or should I start considering that 242 swap? Plenty of vehicles in the boneyard to choose from, and the guy I bought it from said if I had issues with it, he'd work with me on getting it fixed.

Here's a quick picture of it at home; I'll be washing it for the first time today or tomorrow so I'll post some more then.

Resolder the joints in the head light switch to fix the interior, your spot on on that, lots of information here for it. T-case sounds lke it may be on the way, but it'll run for a good bit still. Make sure the tires are all same as far as wear. Vc is pretty iffy about that stuff. I swapped a 242 in mine so I can honestly say the 249 is a stronger case, really puts the power down when you want it! But I opted to not deal with the vc any more. I'm happy with my choice! I lost about 3 mpg's or so with a BB and 31x10.50's. And I've heard VARY mixed reviews about injector upgrades. I'd start with exhaust and intake but not expect too much, it is after all a 4x4 brick!

Congrats on the purchase.....hope you know what you got yourself into!

To the OP, congrats on your ZJ. The thing I love the most about my ZJ (and I've owned several Jeeps including CJ's, YJ's, a KJ Liberty, a WJ and an XK Commander) is that it feels decidedly AMC. My WJ, KJ and XK all felt DaimlerChrysler'ey and therefore lacking on quality and sturdy-ness. The ZJ feels more like a direct descendant of the Wagoneer (LJ), which it is, and more like a well built truck than a comfort oriented car. I've had my ZJ for about a week now and I love it.

And AnotherRedZj, your Jeep is awesome and is exactly what I plan mine to look like. Well done.

You'll learn that most people have a love/hate relationship with their ZJ's, yet they wouldn't give them up. Which kinda sounds like my story about my first ex-wife, which I eventually gave up on, after realizing that I was indeed, throwing good money after bad.....but that's a whole other story, at least my ZJ doesn't let other people drive her, unless she gets my okay first. :-)

I hate mine right now so I'm cheating with a yj!

When the hate/love ratio hits 60/40 or worse, it's time to cut losses. When it comes to my ZJ, I think the love will always be 50% or better but we'll see.

Congrats

Congrats on your new purchase!!

With regards to your radio. You may want to test a couple of things before you assume the speakers are bad and the head unit is good. I recently faced a similar situation where my speakers weren't working and I assumed they were bad.

To test in the simplest way, just use a jumper and connect the leads from what you think is a bad speaker to a known good connection. For example, if your front driver's door speaker works and your front passenger's door speaker doesn't, just jump the passenger door's female connections to the male connections for the driver's side speaker. Obviously, if you get sound, your problem is your head unit and not your speakers. Don't assume the head unit, if it turns on, will deliver power to all connections.

The best way, if you have a meter, is to check all speaker connections for resistance. For me, I needed to have 4 ohms.

Hope this helps in some way.

Thanks kindly! It certainly does have a higher quality feel to it than recent Chrysler products....we had an 05 Dakota that was junk. My dad raised his eyebrow because of that when I told him what I had bought.

Loving the thing so far! Gas hurts a bit...but I knew that going in. Fixed the dimming issue thanks to the great write up people put up, just re soldered the joints between the headlight switch and dimmer switch. Now onto some more fluid changes and other small fixes....like the damn colorant sensor bad. I'm planning on a coolant flush soon, already changed the transfer case fluid and oil, and once my gaskets get in, I'll be draining and refilling the front and rear diffs. I'm pretty sure it is the trac-lok rear end, so I got the right additive from Quadratec already, along with their front and rear floor acts and cargo liner. Also have a new sunroof switch to go in. Going to start planning a 242 swap over winter break probably, before I get new tires.

Regarding the radio, the speakers are well past their prime I'm pretty sure. The ones that do work crackle and pop whenever there is any base at all. I'll check out the testing you guys outlined though just to be sure the head unit is good. I'm not really in a rush to change that out....always liked Chrysler's stock units. I'm planning on replacing the speakers around the Jeep anyways, because those stock decade plus old speakers have gotta be pretty bad. Not much of an audiophile, so I'll likely just get some cheap decent 6.5 two ways to go around the front and rear doors. I think the tweeters are still good....

I'm going to detail the thing soon once I find time, so I can get some pictures!

Cool!

Once the lift bug bites, you'll be in for it. In the mean time, keep on doing what you're doing. Small maintenance items, fluid changes, etc. Your girl needs love but she'll always be there for ya. Good luck!
