New to this site and Grand cherokees

Hello all,
So I was on Craigslist the other day and happened upon the steal of the century. Some guy selling his aunt's grocery getter for cheap. A '96 red grand cherokee limited with, wait for it...85,000 miles and wait again...for 1800 bucks. I've driven it for a couple weeks and nothing has fallen apart so I think I might be in the clear as far as whether it's a lemon or not.

I joined the site for some wisdom from those who have this model and might impart some knowledge as to what to look out for and whatnot.

It's bone stock (grocery getter) and the engine is strong but there are a couple things goin on. It won't come out of 4 high and the sunroof is sagging. Not being too mechanically inclined, I am gonna take it to a buddy's shop, get her feeling good and throw a coat of paint and probably some new rims/tires on.

Cheers!

his jeep info says 5.2 so we can easily assume 249 with the (relatively) low miles VC problems will depend on how the tires were maintained/replaced over the 85K

good overall recommendation is to do a fluid service on everything... oil, trans, TC, diffs, coolant that way you know when it was all done last... maybe even do new plugs/wires/cap/rotor too

Second this! Start with all fresh fluids and replaceable parts! Fuel filter with the tune up.

Im not sure what t-case you have but the stock case (np249) with a v8 did not have a 4 high mode. The 249 shift cover should say 4 ALL TIME, N (for nuetral), 4 L (LOW). Maybe grandma wanted a 242 or 231? lol. Either way it is common for t-cases to not want to shift with old or low fluid. Look at the back of your t-case and there will be a circle ID tag on it. Then you will know for sure which t-case you have.

I bet he means 4 full time.

Sounds like a frozen 249 linkage to me. Grandma never used 4lo, and especially on the 249 if you don't use it you lose it.

Or he is trying to shift it while in gear... trans needs to be in neutral and you need to pull back hard to get it in 4lo

crawl under it an soak the linkage in some PB blaster and let it soak in. Should free it up.
