i am going to change my t case fluid. i can probably drain it but, how do you fill it and w/what? can i go synthetic and is there an additive(slick 50,lucas etc..) that "might" extend its life?

I use ATF +4 in mine. To fill the case, put the fluid in through the upper hole until it reaches the bottom of the hole and starts spilling out.

Be careful when you tighten the drain and fill plugs, they can strip easily. Just get them snug, and then check them after 50 miles or so to make sure they don't loosen up. They don't have to be very tight to seal.

There's more than one TC, which one do you have?

A search will provide the needed info, but if your Jeep is equipped with the QT/QD only use the Jeep 247 transfer case fluid, no additives, no substitutes.

Select-Trac means that you have the NV242 TC. The only fluid you should use is one labeled ATF+4. You can use Mopar brand, but Chrysler has also licensed a number of other manufacturers to produce ATF+4.

The attached diagram shows the rear of the TC with the fill and drain plugs. Usually it's recommended that you loosen the fill plug before removing the drain plug. That way a stuck fill plug won't leave you with a dry TC.

The bottle of ATF+4 should have a spout on it so that you can either put the spout in the fill hole or put a short section of hose on the spout to pour or squeeze the fluid into the fill hole.
